Sammy Piccolo purchased Prado Cafe at the original location on Commercial Drive a little over 3 years ago. He is also a partner in the 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters company, where Prado’s beans are sourced.  There are now 3 Prado locations.

Today we took a seat in another relatively new shop in the Mount Pleasant area, Prado Cafe + Kitchen.

The aesthetic of Prado is reminiscent of most trendy cafes around town, with dark varnished wood, metal chairs, poured concrete flooring and succulents. I enjoyed the white tiled backsplash behind the till that really helped the floor to ceiling windows to brightened up the space.

There was a vinyl spinning when my order for a 49th parallel medium roast was placed. Prado has established a pleasant background volume compared to most trendy cafes with louder music.

The coffee was classic 49th parallel: medium roast with full aroma and a sweet/acidic (fruity) aftertaste. I’ve grown to enjoy most of their roasts.

They also have a kitchen that serves up baked goods, sandwiches and light snacks. We will have to come back for brunch!

All in all, the place is a definite must visit, plenty of room to gather with friends at a communal table or sit down and do some work alone at the bar.

You can’t go wrong with 49th parallel beans mixed with a laid back and stylish environment.

Until next time,
